Recruiting Update: Sleeper DE Commits to VT

After a bit of a drought, the coaches finally landed another piece to this 2011 puzzle.  Dewayne Alford was an unknown until he decided to camp in Blacksburg a few weeks ago at the Hokies 2^nd summer camp.  However, after a good performance on the day, the coaches decided to offer the young man out of Suffolk, Virginia.  With a Virginia Tech offer in hand, it didn’t take Alford long until he decided that Blacksburg was the place for him, calling the coaches Monday night and pledging to Virginia Tech.

Recruiting Update: Hitting the Home Stretch

This past weekend showcased the good and evil of following the recruitment of these high school athletes. Tech hosted their second summer camp on Saturday and had numerous prospects on hand to check out the campus or participate in the camp. That was the good news, the bad news came when the Hokies lost three of their recruits that decided to commit to other schools.

UNC did the most damage landing both Landon Turner and Marquise Williams. UVA was also able to sneak in and grab quarterback David Watford as well. While the two quarterbacks were expected to commit elsewhere, most Tech fans held out hope that Landon Turner would spurn the recent rumors and pick Virginia Tech. However, due to family issues, he chose the school that he felt was right for him. All you can do is wish the kid luck and turn to the next recruit on the board.

Ranking the ACC: No. 6 Clemson Tigers

Last season, Clemson stunned most of the pre-season prognosticators by winning the Atlantic and scheduling a rematch with Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship game.  This year, the Tigers will look to repeat as Atlantic Division winners and take the school to their first ever BCS bowl. However, before that happens, 2^nd year coach Dabo Swinney has some work to do with only five starters returning on offense and seven on defense.  Not to mention his quarterback is still undecided on whether or not he’s returning to school this fall.

Kyle Parker was drafted in the first round by the Colorado Rockies and is looking at a multi-million dollar contract if he leaves.  If that does happen, then the Tigers would have to rely on freshman Tajh Boyd as the team’s signal caller this fall.  Boyd struggled some this past spring but the coaches seem confident enough to hand him the reigns if Parker does leave.

Ranking the ACC: No. 7 Miami Hurricanes

Entering the fourth year of his coaching tenure at Miami University, Randy Shannon finally has a team that he feels can win the Atlantic Coast Conference.  Jacory Harris will return as the team’s starting quarterback, Allen Bailey returns as the team’s speedy sack-master at defensive end, and Harris’s favorite target Leonard Hankerson is back at wide receiver.  The main ingredients for a delicious ACC title run are all there.

So why are they seventh on this list?  Miami’s schedule is absolutely brutal this year.  Although nine wins isn’t enough for a rabid Miami fanbase, if this team can bring home nine wins again this year, it really will be a good season for Shannon’s Canes.

Ranking the ACC: No. 8 NC State Wolfpack

Tom O’Brien’s group experienced a lackluster season in 2009, in which the Wolfpack amassed a 5-7 record with some mysterious losses on the schedule.  However, with their star quarterback returning from his minor league baseball stint, State fans have at least some hope of this being a successful year.

NC State only returns four starters on defense and seven on offense, so expect this to be a bit of a rebuilding year on the defensive side of the ball.  The Pack will also have to find a new running back since Toney Baker decided not to pursue a granted extra year of eligibility.  However, with Nate Irving returning at middle linebacker for the Pack, it may help the defense recover from losing most of its front seven.
